About This Sticker

What does "implied right of access" mean?

Under English common law, there is an "implied licence" that allows members of the public (including salespeople and officials) to approach your front door and knock. However, as the property owner or occupier, you have the right to withdraw this implied licence.

Is this legally enforceable?

Yes. Once you have clearly withdrawn the implied right of access (by displaying a notice), anyone who ignores it and remains on your property without your permission is technically trespassing. While trespass is usually a civil matter, it gives you the right to ask them to leave and to refuse to engage with them.

Does this stop TV Licensing from visiting?

TV Licensing officers (employed by Capita) have no special legal powers to enter your home without a warrant. This sticker makes clear that they do not have your permission to be on your property. If they ignore the notice and knock anyway, they are trespassing.

What if they have a warrant?

A magistrates' search warrant overrides your withdrawal of implied access. However, warrants are rarely granted and require TV Licensing to provide evidence to a magistrate. The sticker does not prevent lawful execution of a warrant, but it does prevent casual doorstep visits.
